Classification Of Single Sign-On Technology

With each passing day, the number of online resources we are accessing is increasing. Memorizing usernames and passwords of each system is really a challenge for us. One of the solutions is the single sign-on solution or SSO.

The solution allows users to access several accounts of the same business using one set of credentials. They can gain access to all the accounts by signing to any of the accounts of a business.

For example, if a business has three different websites: W1, W2, and W3. Without SSO solution, users have to create and manage three different set of credentials and have to enter them each time separately. But with SSO, if they login to W1, they don’t need to enter the credentials again in order to login W2 and W3. This saves their time.

The single sign-on solution is classified mainly into four categories:

Web single sign-on (WSSO): The WSSO only works with the resources which can be accessed through the web. The main aim of the solution is to provide access to the applications without the need to prove identity again.

The access data is intercepted by a proxy server. The server performs the communication between and transfers the result to the requested system. The users who are identified are redirected to an authentication server for successful login.

Enterprise single sign-on (ESSO): It generally works as primary authentication. It intercepts login requests when required by the secondary applications. The solution allows systems to communicate with the other systems that may disable the login screen.

Federated identity: This type of SSO involves an identity and access management solution that uses some standards to enable applications to identify clients without the need for further authentication.

OpenID: It is a decentralized SSO process. The user identity is stored at a URL, so any server can verify it.

Having the single sign-on solution for a business helps in freeing its users from the burden of remembering passwords and also improves their efficiency. This also reduces the cost of IT support help desk.

These are the 4 important SSO types, chose your type based on your business niche.
